Resources—Diapering |
|
Cloth: In general, I use cloth diapers. When Spencer was little, he’d wake up for the day and I changed his overnight disposable diaper in the morning (I didn’t want to change it during the night because that would wake him and me up more and the whole point was to get back to sleep), it was soaked and there were little crystally things on his privates. I found out it was the gel they use to absorb that had reached maximum capacity and was sticky to my baby. I didn’t like the idea at all, so I switched to the old fashioned way. I found that it’s not too much work, and saves a lot of money too. I haven’t had to pay for diapers for Spencer for 3 years, and didn’t have to buy any new ones for Tyler. And if we have more, we’re set again! It’s a great investment. When you’re done, you can sell them. Some of my favorite online stores are Natural Babies and Montana’s Diaper Store. Diapers and Wipers is owned by a local mom (so you can get away without paying shipping!) and she has the most amazing diaper pail! Denver Diaper Company is another local mom selling great diapers as is Natural Choices. Pampered Buns is in Grand Junction. My personal favorite is the Wonderoos/Super Stars/Haute Pockets/Bum Genius—an adjustable pocket diaper, I love those! They snap down to fit a newborn and unsnap to fit a kit up to 30+ pounds so you only have to buy the system once. I prefer snaps over hook and loop; I think snaps are easier in the wash and my kiddo can’t undo them as easily (Denver Diaper Company has several brands like this). Another one-size adjustable diapering system is Mother-ease, but you still have to get the covers in each size and the baby has to sit still for two step to put the diaper on. The forums at Mothering has a section for diapering and they can answer any question about them. Diapering Services: For those who prefer not to deal with the washing part, there are cloth diapering services. Along the Front Range, there are Eco-Baby, The Changing Table and Earth Smart. Other Eco-Friendly Choices: G Diapers are great option too. There is a cloth pant, but the inserts are flushable. Yep, right down the toilet. And if you have to throw it away, they are actually biodegradable (even the health food store brands aren’t biodegradable within a few hundred years!). Of course, if you’re up for something even more different, there is Elimination Communication. The concept is that babies don’t like to sit in their own mess and they offer signals when they’re about to eliminate. If you can learn to read these signals, you can go diaper free. Sounds very radical, I know – but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Some families EC only when at home. Here’s a group in Denver area. |
