Resources—Baby Wearing

Why:

Ever notice a baby in a car seat or in a stroller? Especially covered by a blanket? Most people don’t. Slings bring baby up to where the action is, they let baby into your world—and they get so much more attention! Slings keep baby close and keep your arms free (well, mostly). According to Dr. Sears, babies who are held more, cry less.

Most of the carriers you can get at Babies R Us or Wal-Mart aren’t very good for baby’s hips as they allow baby’s legs to just dangle as baby is being held up by the crouch.  Ever notice how a child will automatically bring his knees up when he’s carried?  That’s the type of position that they need to be carried in.

Stores and Resources:

You can find real slings all over cyberspace, these are some of my favorites. Peppermint, Kangaroo Korner, Children’s Needs, Karma Baby (local mom!), and Cute Slings (another local mom!), Natural Choices (yet another local store!). A local couple makes amazing accessories here at Peekaru.

The Baby Wearer has a ton of information; Mothering has a baby wearing forum too.

Tips:

All baby carriers have a learning curve, so don’t give up on them too soon. Some things I found to help are walking around as soon as I get the baby in, and making sure it is very snug so it doesn’t hurt my back and baby feels secure.
